The American GED® is an internationally recognised alternative to the South African Grade 12 and other high school leaving certificates. Students write four subject tests: Mathematical Reasoning, Reasoning Through Language Arts, Science and Social Studies.
It suits homeschooling students and anyone who has not completed their schooling and is looking for another way to finish high school.
The GED® is a Grade 12 Equivalent, but it is not the same as Matric, and it is worth understanding the difference. The South African Qualifications Authority (SAQA) evaluates each student's application on a case-by-case basis and evaluates the GED® as being the closest comparable qualification to the South African National Senior Certificate (Grade 12).
The minimum testing age in South Africa is 17. A student can register a GED profile on ged.com from the age of 16, and anyone under 18 needs a completed parental consent form. This is standard GED policy.
